Tall and thin, this bloom is pale with a dark-blood eye to haunt you. The bloom, not the scape, can be a little floppy after a big thunderstorm or overhead watering. But on a quiet morning it is stunning and huge.

Dark Hollow is a dramatic, brooding kid from Flight of Orchids. It is a recurved, dark raspberry bloom with a huge dark mulberry-wine band feathering onto the petals. It has "eyelash" lines extending into the green throat from the eyezone, and cream midribs. It is ruffled, and has nice 3-way branching (21 buds). Grows well and sometimes reblooms. They are all examples from the Stuart Kendig white evaluation group, as very white, or class 2. This blooms a very long time, with 3 branches and 23 buds in good garden conditions. The petal surfaces are slightly ridged, and the tepals are ruffled. Sunfast, fertile, excellent parent.

The name comes from my favorite place to hike and rock climb in Virginia.

Shocking eye is what I think of most on this intro. The base color is peach to tan but then has a large reddish purple eye covering most of the bloom. It also has a ruffled cream edge, veined tepals, dark green throat, and chartreuse midribs. It comes from patterned breeding and has the best strongly eyed and patterned kids of any of our seedlings. Fertile both ways. Seedling by Seedling with Faulkner and Carpenter genetics. Foliage damage here in the spring, but recovers well. I suggest only zones 6-9.

Foggy Bottom is one of the oldest neighborhoods in DC, a mysterious low area near the Potomac River, where the State Department resides (who knows what goes on there). The daylily is a secretive purple, with a light green to white throat radiating out onto the petals and tepals until it merges into the grape color midway. The blooms are on tall, nicely branched scapes, and recurve to display the blending of fog and darkness. It is from a cross of PURPLE ARCHITECTURE x JUST JESSIE. Pod and pollen fertile.

This dark red star is named in honor of Fred Benzinger, who was a mentor to many in this area. It is out of two late Benzinger seedlings, and carries a lot of those famous Benzinger characteristics of toughness, good scapes, and carefree culture. It is somewhat old fashioned looking up close, but from a distance is one of the best reds in the garden, with yellow throat, yellow midribs, and lots of blooms. 5 branches, 34 buds, strong bud-builder, very sun-resistant, and in bloom until September.
